Interested in becoming a Referee?

Want to Become a Referee (junior and senior)?

We get a lot of questions, particularly from juniors, about becoming a football referee.

In addition to it being an excellent part-time job, refereeing provides another pathway in football.  In fact, the pathway is there to become an elite referee if you want it.  Brisbane has over half of Australia’s FIFA qualified referees.

To become a referee, you need to complete the following steps:
  1. Be at least 13 years old
  2. Successfully complete the “Laws Of The Game” exam online (free and available 24/7);
  3. Attend a one-day Football Brisbane referee theory coaching course.  If we have enough interest, we will host a course at the Hawks during the offseason; and
  4. Attend a one-day Football Brisbane referee practical coaching course.
After attending the course, you choose whether you want to become a club referee (i.e. just referee games at the Hawks) or become a Football Brisbane referee.
The benefit of becoming a Football Brisbane referee is you get many more opportunities to referee (therefore more pocket-money and the ability to improve quickly), access to regular coaching nights and are regularly assessed.
To ensure that juniors are not put in the deep end too quickly, Football Brisbane does not allow a junior referee to be the centre referee for games above their own age group.
If anyone is interested in becoming a referee, please send your details to and we’ll provide you with more details of upcoming training courses.
